Description:

Virginia Bioinformatics Institute (VBI) was established in 2000 by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a shared resource to support the research and economic goals of the Commonwealth and Virginia Tech. Since its establishment, VBI has grown to approximately 250 employees with the expectation that further significant growth will occur. With its research focus on infectious diseases and systems biology, VBI attracts world-class faculty, post-doctoral associates and other researchers with its transdisciplinary focus using a team-based research approach to advance discoveries at a more dynamic pace than traditional single-investigator based research.

Reporting to the IT Development Lead of Virginia Bioinformatics Institute (VBI) at Virginia Tech, the Developer/Database Administrator (DBA) or Senior Developer/DBA will be part of a team environment to perform middle-tier development of database-related applications and general infrastructure applications using Java and related frameworks and APIs. Will be responsible for the ownership and/or participation in various projects as assigned. Possesses the willingness and discipline to share information with fellow members of the database/system administration and development teams.

The successful candidate will have a Masters degree. or Bachelors degree and equivalent experience in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Information System Management, Database Administration, or related field (for rank of Project Associate); or Ph.D., or Masters degree with equivalent experience in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Information System Management, Database Administration, or related field (for rank of Senior Project Associate); proven experience in Java development, including J2EE, Servlets, JSPs, object-relational frameworks, MVC frameworks, and build systems such as Ant or Maven; proven database administration experience; detailed knowledge of Oracle architecture, security, backup and recovery procedures, database and query performance tuning, stored code development; extensive relational data modeling experience using standard tools; proven data warehousing and OLAP experience, including the design of dimensional data models, querying using MDX, ETL using standard tools; experience in configuration and code management processes and tools, including the use of CVS or Subversion; demonstrated customer service orientation; excellent documentation, communication, presentation and interpersonal skills; and possesses creativity, independence, and high motivation.

Preferences will be given to candidate having Certification in Oracle Database Administration; experience with Java development tools including one or more of Eclipse, JDeveloper or NetBeans (required for rank of Senior Project Associate); knowledge of Oracle, MySQL and PostgreSQL (required for rank of Senior Project Associate); experience with Oracle Enterprise Manager, and one or more of SQLDeveloper, TOAD, PLSQL Developer or DB-Visualizer (required for rank of Senior Project Associate); data modeling experience using ERWin (required for rank of Senior Project Associate); experience with Java object-relational and MVC frameworks including one or more of Spring, Hibernate, TopLink, JSF, Struts, SEAM; experience with OLAP tools including one or more of JasperBI, Pentaho Open BI, Talend Open Studio, Mondrian; or experience designing applications for 508 compliance.

Dependent on the qualifications, the initial appointment may be for one or two years.
