A Network Engineer at the University of Washington is a computer professional with extensive experience troubleshooting and diagnosing complex data and telecommunications problems; and expert knowledge of network systems design, operation, and management. Network Engineers assist UW Technology Services in developing and supporting a state-of-the-art data and telecommunications network environment for the University. Position Complexities This position directly supports the research mission of the University, as well as its teaching and administrative functions. One of the main responsibilities of this position is to diagnose and troubleshoot complex problems involving internet connectivity and performance for the University of Washington, Washington State K-20 Telecommunications Network, Pacific Northwest Gigapop, and other affiliated networks. This position also provides escalation within the Network Operations Center for more junior staff. A Network Engineer in the Network Operations Center is expected to have expertise in contemporary network technologies and protocols including Ethernet, TCP/IP, OSPF, BGP4, IPv6, SNMP, DNS, VoIP, DWDM, and Sonet. Requirements: Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience, in communication engineering, computer science, or related field. Four years of experience troubleshooting complex network problems and working with a variety of network equipment. Expert knowledge of TCP/IP and routing protocols. Familiarity with the simple network management protocol (SNMP) and related tools. Experience working with fiber optic technology including infrastructure, testing new fiber circuits, troubleshooting, and knowledge of industry standards. Demonstrated ability to develop creative solutions for academic, instructional, or research needs. Experience dealing with vendors, writing documentation, and helping develop policies. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Additional Minimums Specific Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Experience troubleshooting network problems on LANs and WANs. Excellent customer service skills. Demonstrated teamwork skills. Experience with contemporary networking technology including knowledge of Ethernet, TCP/IP, SNMP, DNS, wireless, and VoIP. Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Desired: Experience in a research university. Experience with ITIL service management. Conditions of Employment: Must be able to respond to network outages during off-hours and participate in an on-call rotation.
